as the Nursing Alcove, has disappeared with the Fall
2006
semester. Instead, nursing videos may be viewed at various VT/DVD
stations
located around the library or in one of the student study rooms. Videos
formerly housed in the Nursing Alcove are now shelved at the end of the
Audio Book collection and may be viewed in house. The Nursing Media
Collection
contains over 500 audio and video tapes, tape players and monitors and
5 dedicated computers. You may obtain headsets at the Circulation
Desk. Nursing Computers have been relocated to the outside of the
glass wall in Reference. Nursing students have priority use of
these
computers, which contain self-study programs. While some of these
programs
are stored on the individual computers, others require the use of a
compact
disk. CDs may be requested from the Circulation Desk.

The five databases
listed
below also contain current full text, peer reviewed articles in nursing
and allied health*
Some
assignments specify
the use of refereed (also known as peer reviewed) articles. The
11th
edition
of Magazines for
Libraries
(Ready Ref Z 6941 .M23 2002) defines a refereed journal as one
where
"manuscripts
submitted...are
examined both by the editor and one or more specialist in the
individual
field before
approval is
given to publish. The readers (sometimes called an editorial
board)
apparently
ensure a better
chance that
the final product will be a contribution to knowledge."

Access Science
Electronic version of
the
The McGraw-Hill Encyclopedia of Science & Technology [Reference
Q121
.M3 2002].
Encyclopedia entries are
complemented by articles documenting recent research
developments,biographies
of scientists, late-breaking science and technology news, links to
related
web sites, learning resources and study guides. While this is
neither
a medical or nursing resource, it is a good place for dictionary
definitions
and high quality, current, encyclopedia articles.
To
learn more about an individual author:
View
article in html full text. Click on Printable Version,
scroll
to the bottom of the article and click on the author's name.
Warning:
This database does not allow you to limit to refereed or peer reviewed
articles
Also,
this database does not permit emailing articles.
A Library
Card is
required to access most databases from off campus. For information
about

dentistry,
veterinary medicine, and the health care system. Coverage includes over
4,500 biomedical journals, some back to 1966. Each citation includes

numbers. Many of the listings also have short summaries of the article
(abstracts). Sometimes you will find a link to the full text article.
Some

Reference Center Academic or Health and Wellness Resource
Center.
Others may be ordered through interlibrary

Hint: Retrieving
relevant articles
from such a vast collection is a challenge. For effective
searching,
enter your strategy in the textbox and click on Limits. Useful
limits include:
-
Languages

-
Human or
Animal (Human)
-
Subsets (Nursing
journals)
-
Publication
Types (Review)
Clinical
Trials provides current information about clinical research studies
in progress and often accepting patients.
Searching
and Viewing
Tips
-
Specific
searches are more effective
than broad ones. A search on the term "nursing" will yield many
irrelevant
articles. You will have better results if you look for a certain
aspect of nursing care such as "diagnosis" or "treatment."
-
Do not include
words such as
the,
in, about, a, an, etc.
-
If you are
having trouble using
a database, consult the Help files. Help files are usually found by
clicking
a button marked "Help" or "Online Help."
-
To read PDF
files you must install
the Adobe® Acrobat® Reader. Information about this application,
which is available for free, is available on the Adobe
website.
-
Each database
employs its own
search vocabulary and search software. Be flexible and prepared
with
a few synonyms (or near synonyms) in case your first search doesn’t pan
out. Try the search again by using synonyms, broadening or
narrowing
keywords, and limiting by date and type of publication. Suppose you
need
a few good articles on caring for the patient prone to decubitus
ulcers.
Likely search terms include: pressure ulcers, decubitus ulcers or
bedsores.
To Print or
Email Results:
Open the article. Click on Print and follow your
browser's
print command or click on E-mail and enter accurate info in
the
email
address box. Note: tables and illustrations are usually
not included with emailed articles but can be contained in attachable
pdf
files.
