call number A letter number combination that shows where an item is located in the Library. It is the book's address. Shasta College Library uses the Library of Congress Classification system. Most public libraries use the Dewey Decimal System. circulation desk Where you go to borrow and return Library materials. This is also where you can pick up videos and course reserve items (but you have to find the call number from WEBCATalog first). course reserves Items selected by instructors from the Library’s shelves or lent by instructors from their personal collections to be sure that all students have access to them. Reserve books, videos, and articles are shelved at the Circulation Desk. Internet An international network of computers offering many types of services. These include email and access to the World Wide Web. library card Card with barcode that allows students to borrow books, course reserves, and use online databases from off-campus computers. All students are entitled to a free library card. online databases Organized collections of encyclopedia, newspaper and periodical articles available to Shasta College students and faculty through the Shasta College Library's webpage. password A personal code, usually a combination of numbers and letters, used to access your computer account and keep it private. pin number Like a password, a p(ersonal) i(dentification) n(umber) is used to access a computer account and keep it private. At the Shasta College Library, your pin is used to hold or renew library books. It is the month and date (but not year) of your birth. For example, if your birthday is March 22, 1967, your pin is 0322. reference desk This is where you go to ask a librarian for help in finding library materials or using library computers, microfilm, and video equipment. Vendacard Debit card with a magnetic strip that is used to pay for photocopies and computer print-outs WEBCATalog Computerized directory of all materials owned by the Library. Materials are listed by author, title, and subject. webpage Also known as "website". Any resource located on the World Wide Web. World Wide Web Also known as "WWW". An international Internet service. |
The Shasta College Library is designed to help you make the most of your career
as a student and support your continued learning and success after school as well. While you are on campus, the Library building is an important study and information center. When you are off-campus, the Library's webpage will prove the more convenient information center. In this class, you will become an experienced user of both the building and the webpage.
The Shasta College Library collection includes approximately 70,000 books, and 200 periodical subscriptions, 2,000 videos, 1,500 audiocassettes, and an always-growing collection of online databases. Books are arranged by call number. Periodicals are shelved by title. Videos are located at the circulation desk. Databases are listed on the Library's webpage. You must look in WEBCATalog, the Library's online catalog, before you can find a book on the shelf or a video at the circulation desk.
Circulation Desk
The Circulation Desk is the library’s welcome desk. This is where you pick-up your library card. It’s the place to borrow and return books (and pay fines if the book is returned past its due date L ). Course Reserves, videocassettes, and headphones are also stored here.
Reference Desk
The Reference Desk is the library’s help desk. A librarian is available to help you find the Library materials you need. Librarians are also eager to teach you how to use the computers, microfilm readers, and video equipment. You can reach a librarian in person or by phone (530) 225-4975 whenever the library is open.
Reference Books
These books are arranged by subject call number and include dictionaries, encyclopedias, handbooks, and indexes. They must be used in the Library.
Book Stacks
These books are arranged by subject call number and also include special collections of childrens' books and paperback fiction and non-fiction. These books may be borrowed for three weeks.
Research Computers
There are over 70 computers available for research and writing on the central floor of the library. All have Internet access and most have Microsoft word processing programs installed as well. Printing from these computers costs 10 cents per page for black and white, 50 cents per page for color. The Library also maintains a flatbed scanner for use, free of charge. Late afternoons and evenings are a great time for computer research and obtaining librarian assistance.
Photocopy Machines
There are two self-service photocopiers in the Library's Reference Area. Copies cost 10 cents per page. One machine accepts coins, the other requires use of a vendacard. Vendacards cost $1.00, come with 5 free copies, and remain valid from semester to semester. You can add $1.00 (10 copies) at a time to the card.

have a current Shasta College Library card, go to the Circulation desk
and get one. Write down your 14-digit barcode and 4 digit pin in
the spaces below. The password is used to access library databases
when you are off-campus. The pin is used to access your personal
borrowing record.
