Extended Ed Students
How do I
get
a Library Card?
Now, easier than ever!
Use our online
application to get fast access to the Library Databases. Or,
you may still contact your Extended
Education site/center secretary and ask for a Library Card
application.
Your new Library Card will arrive at the site/center about two days
after
you return your completed application to the secretary. There is
no cost for the first card. Replacement cards are $2.00.
What
resources
does the Library provide for Extended Education students?
The Library makes many materials
available to you including:
- Magazine and Newspaper
Articles
Access to over 4 million
magazine
and newspaper articles is available via the Library's Articles
& Databases link. Most of the searchable online databases
contain
full-text articles and cover a myriad of subjects. When you
locate
an article, options are provided to print or email (and in some cases
download)
that article. Need help? Call us at 242-7551
or try Ask a
Librarian.
You should receive a response by the next business day.
- Books
More than 70,000 books (and
other
materials) are housed in our collection. Search the Library's
collections online via the Library
Catalog. If you locate a book to borrow, place
a request to have it checked out to you and sent to your Extended
Ed.
site for retrieval.
- Best Sellers
Featuring a revolving collection
of popular fiction and non-fiction books for check out to our patrons.
- Online eBooks
Over 18,500 electronic books are
available through the Library's web page. Go to Online
eBooks to get started.
- Videos
More than 4,500 videos and DVD's
are housed in our collection, searchable online via the Library
Catalog. If you locate a video to borrow, place
a request to have it checked out to you and sent to your Extended
Ed.
site for viewing. The site secretary will assist you with set up
if you wish to view it on site. Or take it home for a two-day
checkout.
- Internet Resources
Although the Internet contains
much
good information, numerous Web sites are unreliable. Fortunately,
many excellent guides and resources are designed to help you critically
evaluate Web pages. Local
Links and the Librarians' Internet
Index are two Web guides that will direct you to useful and
reliable
sites on the Web containing good information. Consider
the Source: Evaluating Research Tools and Thinking
Critically about World Wide Web Resources are two additional online
tools that will help critical evaluation of Web pages under your
consideration
for research. The Library also provides a Search
Internet page, containing links to the major Internet search
engines,
meta-engines, directories, and other guides.
What types of
services
does the Library provide?
The Library provides the following
services:
- Virtual Access
Most Library resources are
available
24 hours per day, 7 days per week via the Shasta
College Library Web site.
- Reference Desk Assistance
- Need immediate help?
During business hours,
give us a call at (530) 242-7551, or start a conversation with iChat
LIVE from our home page.
- Need
assistance when the Library is not open? Select Ask
a Librarian from our home page and choose the email option.
You
should
receive a response by the next business day.
- Interlibrary Loan (ILL)
ILL is a service provided to you
for acquiring materials not owned by the Shasta College Library.
Typically
there is no cost for this service, however it often takes up to two
weeks
to receive your requested items. You can request materials via ILL by
completing
an ILL
Request Form.
Items will be delivered to your Extended Ed. site/center.
Anything else?
