- The Ebsco family of
databases
Ebsco's databases
include
general interest, professional, and academic resources that contain the
full text of articles or links to the articles online. Multiple
databases
can be searched simultaneously. Ebsco databases with strong coverage of
education topics include:
- Academic
Search Premier
Multi-disciplinary database containing the full text of articles from
nearly
4,000 peer- reviewed journals.
- Masterfile
Premier Multi-disciplinary
database containing the full text of articles from over 2,000 general
interest
magazines and reference works. Most of the resources are drawn
from
popular literature.
- ERIC A
user friendly
version of the Educational Resource Information Center's
database.
ERIC contains over 2,000 abstratcts along with references for
additional
information from over 980 educational and education-related journals.
Caution:
ERIC provides digests and abstracts only. Full text must be obtained
via
the Shasta College Library's Interlibrary Loan service. Simpson
College's Kilgour Memorial Library holds ERIC documents published
after
1988 in either microfiche or online. The Kilgour Memorial Library
welcomes Shasta College students!
- Professional
Development
Collection Highly specialized collection of the full text
from more than 550 education journals and reports. More than half
of these are peer-reviewed titles.
- Vocational
& Career
Collection Full text coverage for 400 trade and
industry-related
periodicals.
Some assignments
specify the
use of refereed (also known as peer- reviewed) articles. The 11th
edition of
Magazines for Libraries
(Ready Ref Z 6941 .M23 2002) defines a refereed journal as one
where
"manuscripts
submitted...are
examined both by the editor and one or more specialist in the
individual
field before approval is given to publish. The readers (sometimes
called an editorial board) apparently ensure a
better chance that the
final
product will be a contribution to knowledge."
To
limit to peer-reviewed
journals:
- Click on
Refine
Search.
- Scroll
down
to Limit your
results. Click on Scholarly (Peer Reviewed) Journals.

- Librarian's
Internet Index (LII)
Anybody can publish
anything
on the web. How can you rapidly find reliable information? The LII
is a classified list of over 50,000 web sites. These sites have been
previewed
by librarians (and if you can't trust a librarian, who can you trust?)
and are regularly updated. Education might be too broad a term,
but
try education periodicals in the search box and you will
retrieve two sites listed below. Other good terms to try are: education
statistics, educational technology, teachers certification, teaching
aids
and devices. Among these dozens of sites are:
- California
Commission on Teacher Credentialing - http://www.ctc.ca.gov/
Comprehensive site
that
describes credentialing requirements and examinations. Also
provides links to California Education Code, the California Basic
Education
Skills Test (CBEST) site, and many teacher training programs.
- California
Department of Education - http://www.cde.ca.gov/
This site details
current
policy and trends, such as class size reduction and minority education.
It reports the latest news on the Academic Performance Index, STAR
Testing,
and The No Child Left Behind Act of 2001.
- California
Teachers Association - http://www.cta.org/CorePage.htm
This organization
boasts
a state-wide membership of over 330,000 teachers and assistants.
The SCTA provides information on scholarships, credentialing, salaries,
and workshops. Follow the SCTA link
to the Student California Teachers Association web page. Choose to
Teach,
the SCTA's bi-monthly newsletter, is posted on this page. If you find
an
advisor, you can open a SCTA chapter here at Shasta College!
- Teach
for America - http://www.teachforamerica.org/tfa/
Since its founding in
1990,
Teach for America has placed 9,000 recent college graduates as teachers
in urban and rural public schools across the United States. This
selective program requires a two year commitment and believes that
excellent
teachers can effect dramatic change in the lives of children.
- U.S.
Department of Education - http://www.ed.gov/
This vast site
contains
educational statistics, policy, curricula, and news. Click on Financial
Aid for information on funding your education. Click on
Teachers
for information on obtaining your degree and creating a classroom.
- Other sites to
monitor:
- CSU
Chico, Department of Education Links -
http://www.csuchico.edu/educ/educ_links.html
Favorite web links
from
the Department of Education include credentialing, lesson plans, major
libraries.
- Project
Arise: Advanced Rural Integrated Science Education -
http://www.projectarise.org/
The Shasta County
Office
of Education is the liaison for Project ARISE, a program sponsored the
Eisenhower Foundation. This site includes lesson plans, power
points,
news and science resources for the classroom.
- Teachers.net -
http://teachers.net
This site contains a
curriculum
database, chat and message boards, printable projects, and a monthly
gazette.
Much of the material is contributed by teachers (not academics).
The site also contains advertising for myriad education related books
and
products.
