eBooks Access Help
Q. What are eBooks?
A. Electronic versions of printed books! Shasta
College Library's over 15,700 ebook titles are supplied through
netLibrary
and ABC-CLIO. They are available at no charge to the College's
registered
students and staff. The internet also hosts collections of
ebooks,
free of charge. To view a number of these collections, click on more
ebooks.
Q. How do I use eBooks from home?
A. Click on the Off-Campus Access (or
satellite)
link to access either netLibrary or ABC-CLIO eBook collections.
Enter
the user ID from the back of your valid Shasta College Library
card.
Enter all 14 digits with no spaces. Make your choice from the
list
supplied.
O. How do I set up an account?
A. To access the entire book through the
Library Catalog from home and to enjoy all of the features of both
collections,
you must set up an account either on campus or remotely.
-
netLibrary: At the netLibrary page
(accessed
with the satellite icon), click on Create
a Free Account located in the upper
right
(white) tab on the screen. Follow the directions. Once your
account is created, you will be able to read your book online, even if
you pull it up through the Library Catalog, and use all features of the
site.
-
ABC-CLIO: Choose the book you wish to
read
and click on the title to open. Above the table of contents,
click
on the NOTES tab and set up your account. It will enable you to
take
advantage of the Notes/Bookmarks features.
Q. How do I use or read an eBook?
A. After deciding to browse an eBook
online,
read through the table of contents on the left side of the screen to
help
you choose where to begin. One may also plunge right in and read
sections
of the book, page by page, using the arrow keys or typing in the page
number.
Q. What else should I know about
eBooks?
A. Using eBooks is easy. Here is
more helpful information:
netLibrary:
-
A built-in American Heritage English Language
dictionary
provides definitions. An audio component pronounces the
word
out loud for students. To see the definition, highlight any word in the
text and then click on the dictionary tab on the left side of the
screen.
-
The text portion of the screen can be
enlarged by
clicking on the "Hide Tools" button at the top.
ABC-CLIO:
-
Possesses a Meriam Webster dictionary, a
thesaurus
and a link to the Word of the Day.
-
Word search within the book is available
along with
a note-taking element.
Q. What happens when I am finished
reading
my eBook?
A. An eBook is "checked out" only
for the period of time one is actively reading online and then
"returned"
for the next user. When finished, please close out the session.
