Favorite Reference Books
Browse the shelves, both reference and circulating, around LC Classification HF 5300. Remember, Reference books must be used in the Library.   Some promising, current titles include:
General

• Encyclopedia of Careers and Vocational Guidance.  10th ed. (location REF 5381 E2 1997) Volume One (of a four volume set) covers industries in general.  The next three volumes are devoted to descriptions of individual occupations.  There is no online version for this resource.
• Occupational Outlook Handbook (Location: REF HF 5381 1996-97) is a guide to occupations, training requirements, and projections produced by the U.S. Department of Labor.  This resource is useful for general information.  The Internet edition is more current (Click on: Occupational Outlook Handbook).
• California Occupational Guides (California Employment Development Department) contain descriptions of occupations and employment statistics produced by the California Employment Development Department.  Salary and employment data vary greatly by location. This resource is a good, local complement to the Occupational Outlook Handbook.  The first volume, California Occupational Guides) is devoted to one-page descriptions of individual occupations.  (Location: REF HF 5381 C255).  The second volume,California Occupational Guide Wage Suppplements, contains salary informat: REF HF 5381 C256.  Also available through the Internet.  (Click on: California Occupational Guides to find out about training and outlook for a particular career.

Online eBooks are electronic versions of printed books.  The Shasta College Library's eBook collection, purchased through netLibrary and ABC-CLIO, includes nearly 18,500 titles.  These are available at no charge to the College's registered students and staff.  The Internet also hosts collections of free ebooks.  These are usually older works no longer protected by copyright.

Locating Online eBooks:

• Select Library Catalog from the Library's web page.
• Click on Power Search.
• Enter your search term in the words or phrase box.
• Scroll down and select ONLINE BK-Online Books from the type box.  Click on Search.
• Repeat search with different search terms.
• The eBook is read by clicking on the URL button.

The Ebsco family of databases
Ebsco's databases include general interest, professional, and academic resources that contain the full text of articles or links to the articles online. Multiple databases can be searched simultaneously. Ebsco databases with strong coverage of career development  topics include:

• Academic Search Premier  Multi-disciplinary database containing the full text of articles from nearly 4,000 peer- reviewed journals.
• Masterfile Premier Multi-disciplinary database containing the full text of articles from over 2,000 general interest magazines and reference works.  Most of the resources are drawn from popular literature.
• Professional Development Collection  Highly specialized collection of the full text from more than 550 education journals and reports.  More than half of these are peer-reviewed titles.
• Vocational & Career Collection  Full text coverage for 400 trade and industry-related periodicals.

• The Shasta College Student Employment Center  website includes active job postings for students.  The Center itself also has a large collection of career planning books, resume guides and software. The Center is open year-round with the exception of the Christmas vacation and spring break week. Operating hours are Monday-Friday from 9:00AM-4:30PM.

• Librarian's Internet Index (LII)  Anybody can publish anything on the web.  How can you rapidly find reliable information? The LII is a classified list of over 50,000 web sites. These sites have been previewed by librarians (and if you can't trust a librarian, who can you trust?) and are regularly updated.  Scroll  to the text box, enter jobs and click Search LII.ORG.  Nearly 300 sites were retrieved, including:

• Career Development Manual - http://www.adm.uwaterloo.ca/infocecs/CRC/manual-home.html - is an excellent site for assistance with resume writing and interview preparation.  It also includes good exercises on setting goals.  This site is sponsored by a university in Canada, so some of the spellings or terms may have to be adjusted for our United States english.
• JobSTAR California - http://jobstar.org/- This site includes sample resumes, career inventories, salary surveys and lists of job fairs.
• Occupational Outlook Handbook - http://www.bls.gov/oco/ - is an excellent site for determining the educational and personality requirements for a particular career as well as the expected salaries and growth potential of the occupation.  To search for a specific career, click on the OOH Search / A-Z Index.
• Record Searchlight , Redding Employment.com- http://www.reddingemployment.com- Help wanted ads are searchable by keyword.  Be creative and flexible with search words. For example, on one day paralegal and legal assistant retrieved no documents, but legal secretary found three.
